Artist Profile

Philip Raskin

Philip Raskin studied at The Glasgow School of Art. He then entered the world of business and is best known as the proprietor of the 'Inn on the Green', a celebrated jazz restaurant in Glasgow that he and his wife operated for almost twenty years. The venue also doubled up as a gallery with a full programme of exhibitions. Philip has now returned to his easel and brushes on a full-time basis, and exploits his chosen medium by combining the heavy impasto application of paint with a delicacy and sensitivity more usually associated with watercolour. With a trademark soft palette and dramatic skies, the overall effect quite magically captures the moods, light and textures of his native Scotland. “I tend to paint very private places for the viewer to own and enjoy. No people, no houses, no telegraph poles; just expansive skies, mist tumbling on a distant hillside and a silence broken only by lapping water and gulls ascending."
