Artist Profile

Joseph Maxwell-Stuart

Joseph Maxwell-Stuart began his art education at the Ruskin School of Drawing in Oxford. From there he went on to Edinburgh University and Art College. In 2011/12, following in the footsteps of Edinburgh-born Orientalist David Roberts (1800s), Joseph was engaged in a painting tour of the Middle East, involving Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Oman. This culminated in a show at the Mall Galleries in London, of some 140 oils and watercolours.

He now lives and paints in the Borders at his studio/gallery situated next to the Dawyck Arboretum near Peebles. Most of his current work is completed ‘in the field’. He particularly delights in the challenge of working directly from nature, whenever possible.
